- Running to stand still - current issues in tennis equipment and anti-doping
- Abstract
Two of the key responsibilities of the ITF Science & Technical Department are: regulation of tennis equipment, and; the administration and enforcement of the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme (TADP) on behalf of professional tennis world-wide. Despite their obvious differences, both areas are concerned with the integrity of tennis competition, albeit from different perspectives. That is, equipment regulation is designed (in part) to prevent advances in (for example) rackets and balls from changing the nature of the game to an undesirable extent, while the TADP aims to ensure equal and fair competition through regulation of chemical substances that may be used by players.
Regulation of equipment requires an ongoing and sophisticated research, testing and approval programme, which is guided by the relevant Rules of Tennis. Similarly, the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme, which is the regulatory document for anti-doping in professional tennis, undergoes regular review, and is guided by the World Anti-Doping Agency Code. The aim of this presentation is to consider current issues regarding the regulation of tennis equipment and anti-doping.
