Summary

The German Tennis Federation consists of 18 independent sections and with 1,600.000 members has the most members of any other Tennis Federation in the world. The entire Federation has 10.000 tennis clubs registered with a grand total of 50,000 tennis courts. The Federation organizes numerous tennis tournaments on all levels. The German International Open in Hamburg, Germany, Davis Cup matches, Fed Cup matches as well the National Championships are the premier events in German Tennis.

The basis of the development system in Germany is the elite-sport concept of the German Tennis Federation. It features a detailed structure of all development levels within the Federation. The centralized goal of the concept is to develop the best junior players both male and female into elite professional players. Talented young players are willing to prepare themselves for the professional level despite the distractions of school and other things. The transition into the much stronger international competition has become harder over the years, due to the increasing depth of young talented players at all levels. This puts additional stress on the players in training, competition and the private life.
The German Tennis Federation and its independent sections are trying to assist those players in their efforts as much as possible. The Federation and sections have developed an infrastructure to help those athletes achieve their maximum potential. This includes proper personnel and structure within each section.
This presentation will focus on the Pro and Cons of the development system of the German Tennis Federation and sections.
